Terre Max has been nearly 100% no-till for over a decade. Why no-till? Besides lowering soil erosion 10 fold, no-till can potentially increase the soil’s organic matter and supply a significant amount of organic nitrogen to the plants. Why do we say this is significant? Nitrogen is nearly a $100 an acre per year expense in corn. Farms with traditional tillage methods have been losing organic matter over the years. If we can reverse this process and add organic matter to the soil we can increase the amount of “free” Nitrogen available to the plant and create a natural source of nitrogen and significantly lower our cost of production.
