Cover Crops

cover cropTerreMax has been planting winter cover crops for several years now. Why plant cover crops? We may be getting redundant here but it all keeps coming back to soil health and building organic matter. Our ancestors settled around Bridgeton, Indiana in the early 1800’s. I always thought “What were they thinking?” , just one more day traveling west and they could have been in Champaign, Illinois farming beautiful black dirt. Why did they stop here in the white dirt? I guess we aren’t going to move so TerreMax is going to try and make the white dirt “blacker” in the Northern Vigo county, Parke, Vermillion, and Clay counties. Cover crops can decay and provide additional organic matter to increase soil health. In addition cover crop roots can scavage and concentrate nutrients near the surface.
